The ADE7753 is a highly accurate, single-phase multifunction energy metering IC developed by Analog Devices. It is designed to measure active, reactive, and apparent energy, along with key electrical parameters such as RMS voltage, RMS current, power factor, and frequency.

The IC is tailored for smart meters, energy monitors, and power measurement systems, integrating analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital signal processing (DSP), and a serial SPI interface in one compact SMD (SSOP-24) package.

By combining precision analog front ends and powerful digital computation, the ADE7753 eliminates the need for discrete metering components, reducing design complexity and improving measurement accuracy and reliability.

Functional Overview:

The ADE7753 integrates:

  • Two ADCs — one each for voltage and current channels
  • Digital signal processor (DSP) — computes instantaneous and average power parameters
  • Digital filters — reduce noise and improve measurement precision
  • SPI communication interface — provides digital access to measurement results
  • Energy accumulation registers — store energy data over time

The IC continuously samples both voltage and current inputs, multiplies them digitally to determine instantaneous power, and integrates the results to compute energy. It supports active (real), reactive, and apparent energy calculations, providing results with high accuracy and low drift.

Operating Principle:

  • The voltage and current waveforms are simultaneously sampled by the on-chip ADCs.
  • The DSP multiplies these signals to obtain instantaneous power.
  • Accumulated values are averaged to calculate energy.
  • Additional digital filters compute RMS voltage, RMS current, and power factor.
  • Results are made available through the SPI interface or CF output pin.
