74F244 Octal Buffers/Line Drivers with 3 State Outputs IC (74244) DIP 20 Package
The 74F244 (equivalent to 74244) is an octal (8-bit) buffer and line driver IC designed for high-speed data transfer and bus interfacing in digital systems.
It provides non-inverting, three-state outputs, allowing the device to connect directly to system buses while preventing bus contention.
It contains two groups of four buffers, each with its own active-LOW enable input (1OE and 2OE), which allow independent control of data flow.
This IC belongs to the FAST TTL (F-series) family, which offers very high speed and strong output drive capability compared to LS (Low Power Schottky) or HC (High-Speed CMOS) logic families.

Functional Description
- The 74F244 acts as a bus driver or signal buffer, designed to minimize loading effects and improve signal integrity when driving large data buses.
- Each group of four buffers is controlled by its own enable input:
- When
OE= LOW, the corresponding outputs follow the inputs. - When
OE= HIGH, the corresponding outputs go into high-impedance (Hi-Z), effectively disconnecting them from the bus. - This tri-state feature makes it ideal for systems with shared data lines.
Applications
- Bus driver or buffer in microprocessor/memory systems
- Signal amplification for long PCB traces or cables
- Peripheral device interfacing
- Data bus isolation
- Backplane driving in computer systems
- Address and data line buffering
- Bidirectional bus systems (with complementary ICs like 74F245)
