The MAX7221 is an 8-digit LED display driver IC designed to control 7-segment numeric displays, bar-graph LEDs, or discrete LEDs using a simple serial interface. It integrates all the circuitry required to drive up to 64 individual LEDs while minimizing external components and microcontroller I/O usage.

The device uses an SPI-compatible serial interface for communication and includes on-chip BCD decoding, multiplex scanning, segment and digit drivers, and brightness control. Housed in a surface-mount (SMD) package, the MAX7221 is well suited for compact display applications requiring high brightness, low power consumption, and easy digital control.
