74HC4040 12 Stage Binary Ripple Counter IC (744040) DIP 16 Package
The 74HC4040 is a high-speed CMOS 12-stage binary ripple counter that divides an input clock signal by successive powers of two. It counts on the falling edge of the input clock and provides 12 parallel binary outputs (Q1–Q12).
This IC is often used to divide frequency, generate timing signals, or count events in digital circuits. It features low power consumption, high noise immunity, and a reset input that clears all outputs to logic LOW.
It is part of the 74HC logic family, designed for high-speed operation and wide operating voltage range (2 V to 6 V). The 74HC4040 comes in a 16-pin Dual Inline Package (DIP-16) suitable for through-hole mounting.

Specifications:-
- Package Type: DIP
- Voltage Rating: 2 to 6V
- Current Rating: 1uA low input current
- Temperature Rating: -40 to 85 Deg C
- Number of Pins: 16
- Propagation Delay: 16ns
Functional Description
Each clock pulse on the input is counted and represented as a binary value across the 12 output pins.
- The first output (Q1) toggles at half the input frequency (f/2).
- Q2 toggles at f/4, Q3 at f/8, and so on, up to Q12 at f/4096.
- When the RESET input is HIGH, all outputs are cleared to LOW regardless of the clock input.
Applications
- Frequency divider or prescaler
- Digital timers and clocks
- Event counters and pulse counters
- Frequency measurement and scaling
- Time delay generation
- LED chasers and sequencers
- Digital waveform generation
