The ICL8038 is a precision waveform generator IC capable of producing sine, square, triangular, sawtooth, and pulse waveforms over a wide range of frequencies.
It is a monolithic function generator designed using bipolar and MOS technologies, offering low distortion, high accuracy, and excellent frequency stability.

The output frequency can be controlled by external resistors and capacitors, or by an external voltage, making it suitable for VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) applications.
It can typically operate from 0.001 Hz to 300 kHz, depending on the configuration.

Functional Description

The ICL8038 internally generates a triangular waveform by charging and discharging a capacitor with a constant current source.
From this triangular wave, it derives:

• A square wave (by comparison), and
• A sine wave (by shaping the triangle wave through a nonlinear network).

By adjusting external resistors, capacitors, and the symmetry control, you can fine-tune the frequency, amplitude, and waveform purity.
