LM331 Precision Voltage to Frequency Converter IC
The LM331 is a high-precision voltage-to-frequency (V/F) and frequency-to-voltage (F/V) converter IC, designed for accurate analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog signal conversions. Developed by Texas Instruments / National Semiconductor, it offers high linearity, wide dynamic range, and excellent temperature stability, making it ideal for precision measurement, data acquisition, and control systems.
Unlike typical analog converters, the LM331 converts an analog voltage input into a pulse train whose frequency is directly proportional to the input voltage. This frequency signal is easy to transmit, count, or process digitally, providing a simple yet powerful solution for accurate analog data representation in digital systems.
The LM331 works by integrating the input voltage into a charge that controls the timing of internal current sources, generating an output pulse train with a frequency proportional to the input voltage. This signal can be easily processed, transmitted, or averaged to recover the original analog value in reverse operation (F/V mode).
It offers a highly linear transfer characteristic, and its performance can be fine-tuned using a few external resistors and capacitors to set the full-scale frequency and gain.
