74LS189 64 Bit RAM with 3 State Output IC (74189) DIP 16 Package
The 74LS189 is a 64-bit (16 × 4) Random Access Memory (RAM) integrated circuit from the 74LS TTL (Low Power Schottky) logic family.
It is organized as 16 words of 4 bits each, providing small, fast static memory storage for digital systems such as microprocessor buffers, lookup tables, and temporary data storage.
The IC has 3-state outputs, allowing multiple memory devices to share a common data bus. Data is written into or read from one of the 16 memory locations using 4 address lines (A0–A3).
The Chip Select (CS) and Write Enable (WE) inputs control whether the device is in read, write, or high-impedance mode.

Functional Description
The 74LS189 allows random access to any of its 16 memory locations using the address inputs (A0–A3).
- Chip Select (CS) must be LOW for the IC to be active.
- Write Enable (WE) determines the operation mode:
- CS = LOW, WE = LOW ? Write Mode
- CS = LOW, WE = HIGH ? Read Mode
- CS = HIGH ? Outputs disabled (Hi-Z)
Applications
- Microprocessor and microcontroller data storage
- Temporary register memory
- Small lookup tables
- Buffer or scratchpad memory
- Control and status storage in digital systems
- Programmable digital systems and test equipment
