The MCP2515 is a stand-alone Controller Area Network (CAN) controller IC that enables CAN communication for microcontrollers that do not have an integrated CAN peripheral. It implements the CAN 2.0B protocol, supporting both standard (11-bit) and extended (29-bit) identifiers.

The MCP2515 communicates with the host microcontroller via a high-speed SPI interface and requires an external CAN transceiver (such as MCP2551) to connect to the physical CAN bus. Packaged in a DIP-18 through-hole package, it is ideal for prototyping, educational use, and industrial control applications.
