TDA0161DP Proximity Detector IC for Metal Detection
The TDA0161DP is a monolithic integrated circuit designed specifically for proximity detection and metal sensing applications. It operates by detecting variations in the oscillation amplitude caused by the presence of metallic objects near a sensing coil. The TDA0161 provides a simple, compact, and reliable solution for building non-contact metal detection systems, such as industrial sensors, object counters, and security equipment.
Manufactured by STMicroelectronics, this IC combines oscillator control, demodulation, and output switching circuitry into a single package, minimizing external components and simplifying circuit design.
The TDA0161DP works by controlling an oscillator circuit whose frequency and amplitude depend on an external inductor-capacitor (LC) network.
- When a metal object approaches the coil, eddy currents are induced in the metal.
- These eddy currents cause energy loss in the oscillator circuit, leading to a reduction in amplitude.
- The IC senses this change, demodulates the signal, and drives the output transistor accordingly.
This allows the TDA0161DP to effectively act as a metal proximity switch — changing its output state when metal is detected near the sensing coil.
